The Patriot Act made me a believer. Libertarians (and some liberals) screamed bloody murder that The Patriot Act was just waiting for abuse, and they were right. I can provide references later if you like, but I’ve got a book that mentioned how the Act is being used, by Federal prosecutors, for cases that just aren’t even remotely related to terrorism.
ReplyDeleteWhen people argued about how the Act would invariably lead to a slippery slope and entangle “the rest of us” (instead of just Muslim al-Qaeda sympathizers), I told them that was PC nonsense – they had said the same thing about capital punishment and that hadn’t happened. I was wrong.
I’m glad the Mr. Shit-Bag got blown away by a Hellfire missile, but it is a very, very bad precedent. Just as The Patriot Act was justified as applying only to “real” terrorists (meaning those who would kill masses of non-combatants indiscriminately for political reasons) and has since morphed into a grotesque unconstitutional power grab against all Americans, I believe this assassination business will be later applied to any threat, including domestic, to the standing political order – The State.
